Hello United Museum Workers,
Thank you to everyone who attended our amalgamated local’s most recent general meeting this past Friday. Our meeting this month focused on engagement with the wider labor movement. We heard a report from our comrade Kevin Boone at the United Library Workers who attended the Asian Pacific Island American Labor Alliance (APALA) Biennial Convention. Our guest speaker Maurice Cobb, USW District 10 Rapid Response Coordinator, spoke to us about working with the union to reach out to our elected representatives and advocate for pro-labor legislative efforts supported by USW.
During the meeting, we began the discussion about holding future meetings on Fridays or Wednesdays. We determined that the next meeting will take place on a Wednesday in mid-November. However, we did not make any binding decisions about the rest of the meetings going forward. Ultimately, we tabled a motion to toggle back and forth between Wednesdays and Fridays, which means we will discuss it further at the November meeting. If you have opinions about what day of the week these meetings should take place, come to the next meeting and make your voice heard!
We received a call to action for the formation of District 10’s Steel Pride Caucus. Participation is open to all members that identify with the LGBTQ+ community, as well as members that wish to actively support their fellow workers. For more information, interested members should contact Chelsey Engel ([email protected]) or Brittani Murray ([email protected]).
We also decided to allocate funds to send members of 9562 to two important labor events occurring this October:
LCLAA’s ¡Que Viva Clemente! Celebration (7:00pm - 10:00pm, October 13th)
The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement will host a celebration of Roberto Clemente’s life and Hispanic Heritage Month at the Jeron X. Grayson Community Center in the Hill District. Clemente was a local sports hero, a Puerto Rican icon, and an outspoken advocate for workers; definitely a man worth celebrating! The event will feature authentic Puerto Rican food, music, and dancing!
USW International Women’s Conference (October 23rd-26th)
This conference will focus on building and enhancing members’ skills, global solidarity, and strengthening the labor movement. The program will include high-profile motivational speakers from the U.S. and Canada, along with women from countries and unions where the USW is forming global alliances. The conference will be held in the Wyndham Grand hotel in Downtown Pittsburgh.
Our Local 9562 will cover the ticket costs/event registration fees for union workers who wish to attend the celebration or the conference. Email [email protected] to share your interest in attending either event.

UMW Victory Party
For more UMW fun and relaxation, join us at our victory party on Tuesday, September 26th at 5:00pm at the Vietnam Veterans’ Pavilion in Schenley Park. All members of UMW, Local 9562, and friends and allies of our union are welcome to attend!
This will be a potluck cookout, so bring something to share with your fellow members! You can use the spreadsheet at this link to let us know what and who you will bring: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1seU58rx8A0QH6JTij0Tl3CB2Rn5uXUgskwzaLz8rurY/edit#gid=0
In addition to eating, drinking, and union bonding, the party will have silkscreen printing from 5:00pm-6:30pm! Bring your own garment and learn how to print the UMW logo on it yourself! Keep in mind that the logo is large and that prints look best on light-colored backgrounds. No silkscreen printing experience necessary; Andy Warhol loved this artmaking process because it is so easy and fun to do!
Questions? Ideas? We want to hear from you! Write to us at [email protected]. Our strength as a union lies in our transparent communication and shared experience. Let’s chat!
