Hello United Museum Workers,
Thank you to everyone who attended the membership meeting last Tuesday. We learned more about United Steelworkers history as we visited their unique and informative exhibition. Our Bargaining Committee led a critical conversation about this new phase of bargaining with a federal mediator. We wrapped things up by planning a variety of solidarity actions across the four museums.
One key takeaway from the meeting is that we have already made a lot of progress at the bargaining table. The many tentative agreements will surely bring about substantial improvements for all workers at the Carnegie Museums. However, as of now, CMP management refuses to budge on some crucial issues: parking, in-gallery seating, management rights, and fair wages for everyone in our union.
The solidarity actions we have planned are vital means of putting pressure on management. They need to understand that ALL OF US care about these negotiations, not just the dedicated members of our Bargaining Committee. They need to see how passionate and organized our union members are. These actions also help to garner support from the general public.
We have accomplished a lot just in the last week!
Union Power After Hours
Last Friday, UMW members demonstrated outside of Speakeasy Science, a 21+ event at the Carnegie Science Center. We chanted, made adorable posters, handed out stickers and balloons, grilled hot dogs, and reminded visitors that some things haven’t changed since the roaring twenties: Carnegie institutions still won’t pay workers what we deserve. USW brought out the bat light to project our demand for a fair contract on the wall of the Rangos Theater. In the end, CMP management panicked and actually called the police even though we had not broken any laws.

Forward, together!
The next two bargaining sessions will take place on Thursday, April 27th and Friday, April 28th. We expect the Bargaining Committee will have a call to action for us shortly after that. Here are a few ways that you can prepare:
