Hello United Museum Workers,
Thank you to everyone who attended our most recent general meeting on July 19th. At the meeting, our UMW officers got officially sworn in and we received another update on Local 9562’s finances. We also determined that subsequent meetings of the local will take place every other month, so the next general meeting will happen sometime in September.
Following all the serious business and in a bid to make our meetings more FUN to attend, we have created a SNACK committee that will provide FREE SNACKS at every meeting! If you have ideas about what kind of snacks should be at every meeting or allergy restrictions, please email [email protected] or attend the next general meeting and we’d love to have your input.

Save the Dates: Celebrations on September 4th and September 26th
We have two parties coming up this fall - a Labor Day Picnic and a Victory Party for the UMW!
Labor Day takes place on Monday, September 4th this year. We will share details about the Pittsburgh Labor Day Parade in an upcoming newsletter. After the parade, all members of Local 9562 are welcome to attend a Labor Day Picnic at Rhododendron Shelter in Highland Park.
Our Victory Party will be held at the Vietnam Veterans’ Pavilion in Schenley Park from 5:00pm - 9:00pm on Tuesday, September 26th. All members of UMW, Local 9562, and friends and allies of our union are welcome to attend!
Both of these celebrations are potluck cookouts, so bring something to share with your fellow members! If you’d like to help with organizing either celebration, reach out to Jim Kappas at [email protected].
We Still Need Membership Cards
Now that we have ratified our union contract, everyone needs to sign a union card in order to attend union meetings and participate in the decision-making process. If you haven’t signed a card yet, you can still do so! Attend the next general meeting in person, ask a coworker that’s involved with the union, or email [email protected].
Collection of union dues will begin on the pay period starting on August 6th and all employees will see the adjustment in the paycheck dispersed on September 1st. To learn more about union dues, you can read more here: https://www.usw.org/members/your-dues
Our local will receive 44% of all dues paid and all of us together decide democratically how to spend that money. Join us at the bimonthly USW Local 9562 General Meetings to make your voice heard.
