FEBRUARY 15 2021 - GENERAL MEETING
Greetings United Museum Workers!
Thank you to all who attended our first General Meeting! Read more below on how you can participate in our union.
We voted on the composition of our Bargaining Committee composition. At our first General Meeting, UMW members approved a 9-person Bargaining Committee, with 5 seats reserved for members from each CMP component (AWM, CMNH/PNR, CMOA, CSC, Central Services), and 4 at-large seats. This provides flexibility in the democratic process to elect a variety of staff members who will fight for the interests of the entire general membership.
Every UMW member can vote for up to 9 candidates. The nominees with the most votes from each CMP component will be awarded a seat on the Bargaining Committee . The next top 4 vote-getters overall will win the remaining at-large seats.
It is the Bargaining Committee’s job to secure the best contract for the entire general membership. All 9 members represent a united front in support of CMP workers and our many diverse roles and responsibilities when negotiating with management.
We’re now looking ahead to our next steps in forming the Bargaining Committee, coordinating the election, and maintaining communication with UMW membership.
Upcoming Nominations Meeting: Join us at 7 pm on Tuesday, February 23, to nominate candidates for our Bargaining Committee! Anyone in the unit can run for Bargaining Committee. You can nominate yourself or someone else. All nominations must be made “in person” (by Zoom) but nominees do not need to be at the meeting to accept the nomination (the Election Committee will follow up with nominees for their acceptance). Register for the meeting here.

- Join the Contract Action Team (CAT): CAT members talk to our coworkers about working conditions, changes from the status quo, and priorities we want to see in our contract, which CAT members then communicate to the Bargaining Committee. The CAT will also distribute a Bargaining Survey that will go out to all UMW members to ensure all concerns are heard. If you like talking with your coworkers and ensuring all voices will be heard, email us at unitedmuseumworkers.usw@gmail.com to join the CAT!
- Join us for a CAT meeting on Tuesday, February 16, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.! Email unitedmuseumworkers.usw@gmail.com for the Zoom link.
- Join the Election Committee: Help coordinate the Bargaining Committee nominations and election. You’ll schedule and run the nominations meeting, determine the best method of running the election, make the ballots, and count the votes. If you want to ensure a smooth election process, email us at unitedmuseumworkers.usw@gmail.com to join the Election Committee!
- Run for the Bargaining Committee: The Bargaining Committee will develop contract proposals based on the priorities and feedback of our coworkers and will attend meetings with CMP management to negotiate the strongest possible contract. There is a significant time commitment to being on the BC. The term lasts until we ratify our first contract. Anyone in our bargaining unit can run for Bargaining Committee. If you are interested in running, have someone to nominate, or have any questions, come to the Nominations Meeting on February 23 or email us at unitedmuseumworkers.usw@gmail.com.
