AUGUST 3, 2021 - UMW Newsletter

Hello United Museum Workers!

Exciting changes are happening around CMP! Two of our faithful Bargaining Committee representatives have been promoted. Congratulations to Shannon Thompson and Aiyana Kachmarek! However, this means that they will no longer be union-eligible and therefore cannot serve on the BC. We must now select two coworkers to take their place, at least one of whom must currently work for the Andy Warhol Museum.

It is the Bargaining Committee’s responsibility to secure the best contract for the entire general membership. All 9 members represent a united front in support of CMP workers and our many diverse roles and responsibilities when negotiating with management. The BC plans to hold our first bargaining session on Wednesday, September 1st.

We will host a virtual nominations meeting on Wednesday, August 11th from 7:00 until 7:30pm. You must attend this meeting in order to nominate yourself or a coworker. Nominees will have the opportunity to make a short statement about themselves at the end of the meeting. Attendees will also have a chance to hear from the rest of our Bargaining Committee and get the latest updates. This is your chance to play a major role in securing our first contract!

Click here to register for the nominations meeting.
I'M INTERESTED!
If more than two of our union siblings are nominated to join the Bargaining Committee, we will send a bulletin to everyone in UMW with a digital ballot on Wednesday, August 18th. The election will remain open until 5:00pm on Thursday, August 26, and the results will be announced in a newsletter shortly thereafter.

WARHOL RAISES AHEAD OF CONTRACT
More good news: the Gallery Attendants at the Andy Warhol Museum will receive a long overdue pay raise! Their new rate will begin at $10 per hour starting on August 8th. It is exciting to see conditions already starting to improve for workers at CMP!

REORGANIZATION AT CSC
Carnegie Science Center is proposing to reorganize the Science on the Road and Fab Lab departments, including adding new part-time and full-time positions. As a union, we have the opportunity to review their plans and give our input. Come learn about the new positions and help us formulate what to propose around job descriptions, hiring priorities, advancement opportunities, and how training and professional development can be built into the department reorganization. This event is open to all CMP employees, but especially CSC employees who are interested in working in Science on the Road and the Fab Lab. Join us for a virtual open house on Thursday, August 5th at 6:30pm via Zoom.

SAVE THE DATE: LABOR DAY PARADE

On Monday, September 6th, the United Museum Workers will, for the first time ever, march with the United Steelworkers and United Library Workers as one union in Pittsburgh's Labor Day Parade! Learn more here. Meet us at 9am in the Melody Parking Lot (near the former site of the Civic Arena) to grab some union swag and join the largest Labor Day parade in the country!
I'M INTERESTED!
We hope you can attend the many important UMW events coming up in the next few weeks. We formed this union to represent all of us at CMP, and your participation will ensure your voice is heard.

Still have questions? Ideas? We want to hear from you! Write to us at unitedmuseumworkers.usw@gmail.com. Our strength as a union lies in our transparent communication and shared experience. Let’s chat!
