Hello United Museum Workers,
Thank you to everyone who attended our first general meeting as an amalgamated local on Friday, June 23rd. It was fun to meet our new local siblings from other USW-affiliated unions in the Pittsburgh area! Another general meeting will take place in late July.
During the general meeting we got to know our Local Officers, discussed general logistics as to how our new local will operate, and learned about the financial holdings of the local. We approved a round of budgetary decisions, including funds for a Google Drive for unionized HCL workers, reimbursement to the Elections Committee for the UMW contract ratification vote, and the cost of printing copies of the UMW contract for everyone in our bargaining unit.
To read the meeting minutes draft, click the button below for the pdf provided by Recording Secretary, Jamie Cravotta. We will vote on whether to approve these minutes at the next general meeting:

In future newsletters, we will provide short biographies of everyone in senior leadership. We will also add a new page about the UMW leaders to our website in the coming weeks.
The duties for each position are described in our local's by-laws as follows:
Unit President
It shall be the duty of the Unit President to preside at all meetings of the Unit; to decide all questions of order, subject to appeal to the Local Union; and, consistent with the provisions of the By-laws and the Manuals, policies and Constitution of the International Union, to perform such other duties as the Unit or Local Union may assign. Become a Steward
The Unit Grievers have the authority to appoint unelected Stewards who can participate in Weingarten meetings and assist with other UMW matters. If you are interested in becoming a Steward, please contact anyone you know in senior leadership or email us at [email protected].
We Still Need Membership Cards
Now that we have ratified our union contract, everyone needs to sign a union card in order to attend union meetings and participate in the decision-making process. If you haven’t signed a card yet, you can still do so! Attend the next General Meeting in person, ask a coworker that’s involved with the union, or email [email protected].
Questions? Ideas? We want to hear from you! Write to us at [email protected]. Our strength as a union lies in our transparent communication and shared experience. Let’s chat!
