Subject: Our union makes first economic compensation proposal
Greetings UMW Members!
We have a very exciting and important update to share! At Friday’s bargaining session, the UMW Bargaining Committee introduced our initial economic compensation proposal to CMP management’s bargaining team. Up to this point we’ve made great progress in coming to agreements with management on aspects of the non-economic portions of UMW’s first contract. We’ve had important changes implemented and concessions made by CMP. There have also been some department specific job description/structural changes and two long overdue CMP minimum wage increases. Now we’re making bold moves to fight for all members of our Bargaining Unit to be fairly compensated for their work.
Our union has put on the bargaining table a proposal that no employee in the Bargaining Unit that is employed by CMP will be paid less than a living wage for their work. The increases that were introduced would affect EVERYONE within the Bargaining Unit. We’ve all felt our work has been undervalued by CMP for years. That sentiment was one of the galvanizing spirits that led to the creation of our union. We love our jobs, but it has become increasingly hard to remain in our positions due to the systemic wage stagnation we’ve experienced. The increases that have been proposed seek to address the loss of purchasing power employees have suffered as a result of an extended period of record high inflation. Staff deserve to be compensated in a manner that reflects the cultural and economic importance the Carnegie Museums possess within the region. Receiving competitive wages will also have a tremendous impact on staff retention rates and aid in attracting the best workers to our museums.
Our proposal is just the beginning of our more comprehensive economic proposals moving forward that will include benefits and additional economic items. We currently have three bargaining sessions scheduled for September and are excited to continue negotiations. We strongly encourage CMP to consider these concerns while drafting their response.
As we await CMP’s counter offer to our economic proposal, we have some exciting UMW events scheduled for Labor Day and moving forward into September. Showing our union’s solidarity and strength at this moment is imperative. The changes we’re seeking won’t come easily, but they’ll happen as we continue to fight together.
The Museums Work Because We Do!!

Natalie McClaine is a part-time gallery associate at AWM. Born and raised in Western Pennsylvania, she often visited the Carnegie Museums in her formative years, instilling in her lifelong passions for art, science, nature, history, preservation, and learning. She is an alumna of Clarion University of Pennsylvania. Natalie began working at AWM as a part-time gallery attendant in February 2020. In June 2021, she took a full-time position as one of the initial members of the CMOA gallery associates department. In January 2022, she returned to AWM as a gallery associate. The things she loves the most about working at the Carnegie Museums are the positive impact we have on the community, meeting people from all over the world, and most of all her incredible friends/coworkers. Her other interests include movies, traveling, and spending time with friends/family.
