Happy New Year from the United Museum Workers!
You’re invited to our UMW Info Session: Know Your Rights
Even before ratifying our first contract, we have already gained protections in the workplace and improved our shared working conditions! Join us for a virtual info session on Monday, January 31, 6:30 - 8:30pm to learn what our union has accomplished and what rights you have as a unionized worker. Understand what it means to be a union steward and how to exercise your Weingarten Rights. Hear from experienced educators from the United Steelworkers and ask questions about what forming UMW has secured for us and how you can get involved.

Health & Safety Updates
First and foremost, thank you to the frontline staff for all of your hard work during this trying time. This past month has brought greater uncertainty and strain than ever faced before. Increased risk of exposure due to COVID-19 spikes has caused staffing shortages, most notably forcing the closure of the Carnegie Science Center for 5 days. Our union stands with the decision to temporarily close CSC to the public with the health and safety of workers as first priority.
We have paid close attention to the working conditions of frontline staff as the Omicron variant spreads across the country. Armed with first-hand knowledge of these struggles from those of you on the front lines, we have brought several proposals to management geared towards making the museums safer for staff and visitors alike. While CMP has agreed to some of our proposals, ultimately we are not satisfied with the slow pace of these negotiations, especially considering the rapid rate at which COVID-19 is currently spreading.
At present, we have negotiated the distribution of N95 masks to frontline staff and updates to the COVID-19 policy, including assurance that volunteers and researchers must comply with the same precautionary standards as staff. We will continue to press CMP regarding proposals that we feel were not addressed adequately or in a timely enough manner.
If you feel unsafe at work or want to share concerns regarding CMP’s health and safety policies, please fill out this brief form, reach out to your museum’s CAT (Contract Action Team) Coordinator, or write to us at [email protected].
In case you missed it…
We’re all getting a raise! Check out the latest update from our Bargaining Committee regarding our recent victory in negotiating a 2.5% cost of living adjustment for 2022: the highest such raise offered in over five years!
Want to get more involved? Join the CAT as we pursue our first contract! Fill out our Activism Menu or write to us at [email protected]. Our strength as a union lies in our transparent communication and shared experience. Let’s chat!
