MARCH 28, 2023
Hello United Museum Workers,
In our last update, we announced that CMP presented a proposal to raise the minimum wage for our bargaining unit to $16 an hour, upon contract ratification. This was the union’s opening proposal and reflects our commitment to earning a living wage.
In a recent email from HR (March 24th), CMP conflates their so-called ‘cost of living’ adjustments from previous years (2.5% in 2022 and 2.5% in 2023) with contractual raises that we are currently negotiating. In truth, CMP is proposing a 2% increase for members earning over $16 an hour for each year of the Museums’ proposed 5-year contract. This proposal is inadequate and unacceptable. While we have moved on many parts of our current proposals in service of securing a contract, we are not willing to throw some of our most committed and experienced members under the bus as management continues to undervalue their contributions.
One of the main reasons we formed our Union in 2020 was to end this cycle of meager institutional raises. While we appreciate the progress, we need to look ahead, not back.
We have seen workers at other museums fight for and win significant raises. Now it’s our turn!
We bargain again on Thursday and hope to see significant movement from CMP. Stay tuned for another update!
Get involved with the Contract Action Team at the next meeting, Tuesday 3/28 at 5:30pm at the Lutheran University Center 4515 Forbes Ave (Across the street from CMOA).
In solidarity,
The United Museum Workers Bargaining Committee
