June 22, 2021 - Update from Our Bargaining Committee!
Hello United Museum Workers!
Thank you to the hundreds of you who participated in our bargaining survey. The survey responses are the basis for everything our Bargaining Committee is working on, including our broad priorities and specific concerns. The BC has been collaborating in small working groups and meeting as a committee at least once a week to synthesize considerations from across the museums into contract proposals. With these proposals underway, our Bargaining Committee has suggested dates to meet with CMP management for the first time. With your help and our seat at the table, we will ensure our museums' success for years to come!
In the meantime, our Bargaining Committee has engaged in negotiations with CMP regarding newly created positions, job title changes, and promotions initiated by management for our fellow UMW members. As these and other changes to the status quo arise, our union will continue to advocate for all of us.
As we begin to negotiate our first contract, we should all remember our rights as workers and as union members:

CMP Workers Stand Together!
Last Friday UMW’s own Gabi DiDonna spoke at a rally in solidarity with our colleagues in CMP’s custodial team as their union fights for a fair contract with CMP. As Gabi mentioned in her speech, they have helped to keep us safe as the museums reopened in the midst of a global pandemic, and they deserve better!

As we begin to negotiate our first contract, we should all remember our rights as workers and as union members:
- Talking about the union at work
- CMP employees can talk about non-work issues during work hours, and therefore can briefly converse about union activity while on the clock. However, as a best practice, in-depth conversations about our union should happen on breaks or after work.
- CMP employees have the right to wear union insignia, such as buttons, at work.
- Weingarten Rights
- You have the right to have union representation during a disciplinary meeting with your supervisor or HR.

CMNH Museum Educator Brandon Lyle was in the audience. "Friday’s rally was an emotional event as several custodians, politicians (including Ed Gainey), and labor leaders gave passionate speeches about the need for wage increases for members of 32BJ. It was an honor for the UMW to stand with our custodial coworkers and show solidarity in their time of need."
This is just the beginning of the conversation.
