August 15, 2022 - UMW Newsletter
Hello United Museum Workers!
Labor Day is coming! Get ready to celebrate with our union!
We know that when we stand together, we win together. Let’s show our union pride with some UMW visibility!
Wear your UMW button to work on Monday, September 5th. Don’t have a button? Ask your friends on the CAT (Contract Action Team) to hook you up! Do you have coworkers who need buttons? Send them our way and we will give them buttons! If you need help getting in touch with your CAT representatives, email us at [email protected].
Send us a selfie, or a photo of your workplace, pets, or favorite museum spot with your button, and be sure to tag us @UMWpgh in your posts on social media!

March Together in the Pittsburgh Labor Day Parade!
On Monday, September 5th, the United Museum Workers will, for the first time ever, march with the United Steelworkers and United Library Workers as one union in Pittsburgh's Labor Day Parade!
Meet at 9:00am in the Melody Parking Lot at 66 Mario Lemieux Place, Pittsburgh, PA 15219, near the former site of the old Civic/Mellon Arena to meet up with our union colleagues and get a FREE USW t-shirt (look for a white USW van).
After the parade, join us for free refreshments at the USW International Office at 60 Boulevard of the Allies. All members and friends of UMW are welcome!
Join us at the Carnegie Science Center
One of our top priorities as a union is to connect with our members across all of our museums. We will be tabling in the Carnegie Science Center parking lot behind Sportsworks, near the staff entrance. Join us on Tuesday, September 13th, from 8:30am to 11:00am to support CSC workers as they host the ASTC conference. Stop by for some fun conversation and tasty treats! Help us give out coffee, UMW buttons, and Weingarten cards to our CSC colleagues.
If you are available to help distribute treats and union materials at CSC, please write to us at [email protected].
Two New Victories from the Bargaining Committee
Our Bargaining Committee has recently secured two major pre-contract victories!
Beginning on October 1st, all four museums will implement commissions for frontline staff selling CMP memberships! There will be a predetermined amount of commission per membership sold based on the tier of membership, with most commissions offering a 5% incentive. This will be an immediate source of additional income for our frontline staff as we bargain for more permanent pay raises.
And that’s not all! Soon every worker in the bargaining unit will receive an official employee email address! Workers at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History will be the first to receive CMP email addresses in the coming weeks. IT will roll out email addresses for the rest of our museums in short order. Our union has fought tirelessly for improved communication and increased access to the information we need, and these electrifying wins would not have been possible without YOU.
For more details on these important victories, read the latest Bargaining Update on our website: https://www.umwpgh.org/august-4-bargaining-update.html
Questions? Ideas? We want to hear from you! Write to us at [email protected]. Our strength as a union lies in our transparent communication and shared experience. Let’s chat!
