Subject: Our union secures new minimum wage and raises for majority of bargaining unit
Greetings everyone,
Following the unprecedented 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment for all employees that our union secured in January 2022, the Bargaining Committee has an important announcement regarding wage increases for our lowest paid workers. CMP has proposed to our union that they would like to set a new minimum hourly wage of $12.00. Following the seniority-based structure we negotiated in fall 2021, there will be additional increases to reward employees with more years of service. This is important in order to guard against wage compression (new employees making the same as employees with more experience).
Through our negotiating process, we have been able to secure increases for 325 in-unit members who are currently making $15/hour or less. These wage increases are one-time adjustments to support some of the lowest paid positions before a union contract is in place to establish a formal wage increase scale. We understand that these raises are just a step in the process and we will continue to negotiate further wage increases with management when we shift to Economic Bargaining.
Below is a chart that helps to explain the specific increases as agreed upon between the museums and UMW. If you are unsure if you are affected by these changes, please contact your union colleagues on the Contract Action Team or email us at [email protected].
We on the Bargaining Committee are celebrating this victory as we work towards our much larger goal: a strong first collective-bargaining agreement that addresses pay equity and working conditions for all union members.
In solidarity,
United Museum Workers Bargaining Committee
